Bayern beats Stuttgart 6-3 in German Cup
BAYERN Munich beat nine-man Stuttgart 6-3 yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the German Cup, three days after winning 5-3 against the same opponent in the Bundesliga.
Miroslav Klose came off the bench and scored twice in his first game in three months following a hamstring injury.
In other games, three second-division teams advanced against Bundesliga clubs - Energie Cottbus won 3-1 at Wolfsburg, Duisburg upset Cologne 2-1 and Alemannia Aachen eliminated 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time.
Eintracht's Pirmin Schwegler was sent off in the 15th minute for a foul in the area, but Aachen wasted the ensuing penalty.
Wolfsburg's defeat increased the problems for coach Steve McClaren, whose team is 13th in the Bundesliga.
In Stuttgart, Bayern raced to a 2-0 lead inside the first eight minutes through goals from Andreas Ottl and Mario Gomez, who later had to leave the game with a calf injury and was replaced by Klose.
Stuttgart forward Pavel Pogrebnyak scored twice to level before halftime, but Klose restored Bayern's lead after the break.
Stuttgart defender Khalid Boulahrouz was sent off in the 67th for a second yellow card. Bastian Schweinsteiger, the target of Boulahrouz's tackle, tried to stop the referee from sending off the Dutchman, arguing the foul was not particularly rough.
Although a man down, Stuttgart produced some of its best football and earned a penalty when Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt downed Cacau. Christian Gentner took the spot kick, but Butt saved his attempt.
Stuttgart captain Matthieu Delpierre leveled the game again with a header off a corner by Zdravko Kuzmanovic, but was then sent off for a second bookable offense.
Thomas Mueller, Klose and Franck Ribery used the two-man advantage to complete Bayern's victory.
