Bayern beats debutante Fuerth, Fortuna triumphs

BAYERN Munich handed Greuther Fuerth an unhappy German Bundesliga debut by beating the promoted side 3-0 in their opening match of the season yesterday.

Thomas Mueller opened the scoring for the visitors in the 43rd minute before further goals from Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben gave the Bavarians, who left Bastian Schweinsteiger out of the team, a comfortable win.

Two-second half goals from offseason signing Dani Schahin gave promoted Fortuna Duesseldorf a 2-0 win at Augsburg as it returned to the top flight after a 15-year absence.

A 79th-minute freekick by Juan Arango secured Borussia Moenchengladbach a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim while Hamburg SV slumped to a 0-1 home defeat against FC Nuremberg. SC Freiburg drew 1-1 with Mainz.

Later, Eintracht Frankfurt was hosting Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart was playing VfL Wolfsburg in a rescheduled game.

Defending champion Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 2-1 at home in the league opener of the 50th Bundesliga season on Friday.

It took substitute Mario Goetze three minutes following his introduction to score in the 81st minute, after Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie had equalized for Bremen on his league debut in the 75th.

"I'm delighted with how it worked out," said Goetze, the 20-year-old midfielder who missed most of the second half of last season through injury. "For the team and myself."

Striker Marco Reus had opened the scoring for the home team in the 11th to repay some of the 17.5 million euros (US$21.9 million) Dortmund paid Moenchengladbach for the 23-year-old German player of the year in the offseason.
