Bayern claws back to defeat City

Treble winners Bayern Munich came from a goal down to beat Manchester City 2-1 in a mini pre-season tournament final on Thursday in Munich and look on track for the season’s start next week.

In other preseason friendlies, Karim Benzema scored two goals to lead Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy, while Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory over 10-man Inter Milan.

In Munich, Bayern dominated much of the game.

“We played a good first half but did not attack enough,” Bayern’s new coach Pep Guardiola said.

“Obviously City are a very strong team. With some substitutions in the second it worked better. I am optimistic for the season. The coach always has to be optimistic.”

New City signing Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring, latching on to a Samir Nasri pass to beat Javi Martinez in a sprint and slot past keeper Manuel Neuer on the hour.

The Premier League side’s joy was short-lived though as man-of-the-match Thomas Mueller converted a penalty awarded for handball five minutes later and the hosts added another with a low header from Mario Mandzukic in the 73rd.

In Glendale, Arizona, Karim Benzema scored two second-half goals in the Champions Cup friendly tournament.

“In general it was a good performance from the team,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “We played well. We had a good combination in the front. We had a lot of opportunities.”

Midfielder Angel DiMaria scored the first goal, taking a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, who had beaten three defenders.

In Indianapolis, Oscar and Eden Hazard scored first-half goals, leading Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over 10-man Inter Milan on Thursday in the Guinness International Champions Cup, a preseason friendly.

Oscar put Chelsea ahead with a shot into a top corner of the net in the 13th minute, capping a move begun by a powerful run by Victor Moses.

“Oscar has been with us for five days because of the Confederation Cup,” Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho said. “I want him to be a top player, not just a top talent.”
