Bayern fires coach van Gaal
BAYERN Munich has fired coach Louis van Gaal following Saturday's 1-1 draw against Nuremberg in the German Bundesliga, the Bavarian club said yesterday.
Van Gaal had been due to leave at the end of the season but, with the team in danger of missing out on next season's Champions League, his departure was brought forward.
"Bayern has given coach Louis van Gaal leave of absence with immediate on its website.
Jupp Heynckes has already been named as Bayern's coach for next season and Andries Jonker would be interim coach for the rest of this term, Bayern said.
Bayern dropped to fourth and was overtaken by Hanover 96 which beat Mainz 05 2-0 on Saturday and now occupies the Champions League qualifying-round spot. Fourth place would mean a spot in the Europa League. With next season's Champions League final to be staged in Munich at its own Allianz Arena, it would be a catastrophe for Bayern if it missed out on the competition.
"After dropping to fourth in the table and with the risk of not achieving the minimum target of a Champions League qualifying place, the decision was taken for the good of FC Bayern," said the club.
Bayern's next match is against Bayer Leverkusen, which is coached by Heynckes. Leverkusen is second, six points ahead of Bayern, and still has a chance to win the title.
Van Gaal won the Bundesliga and German Cup and led Bayern to the Champions League final last season, his first in charge.
In September, Bayern extended his contract to the end of the 2011/12 season but, after a disappointing season, said in March that the Dutchman would be leaving at the end of the current season.
Bayern was knocked out in the last 16 of this season's Champions League, losing on away goals to defending champion Inter Milan after conceding a last-minute goal and losing 2-3 in the home leg despite dominating the match.
Van Gaal, 59, has also coached Ajax Amsterdam and Barcelona.
