Bayern goes top as Ribery scores
FRANCK Ribery struck a late winner to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win at home to Hamburg SV on Sunday and send the Bavarians top of the German Bundesliga for the first time this season
The Frenchman burst down the left, cut inside his marker and scored with a shot inside the near post in the 78th minute, only his third Bundesliga goal of an injury-plagued season.
The win moved Bayern onto 52 points from 24 games and took it two ahead of previous leader Bayer Leverkusen, which was held 0-0 at home by Cologne on Saturday and lost top spot despite being unbeaten after 24 games.
Schalke 04, which beat arch-rival Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Friday, is a further two points behind.
Hanover 96 finished the weekend in the relegation zone after it lost 0-1 at home to champion VfL Wolfsburg in the other game.
Hamburg (40) stayed fourth.
"It was an even match, Hamburg have very good players but a single player decided the match," said Bayern coach Louis van Gaal.
In Spain, Diego Forlan scored twice as Atletico Madrid won 4-1 against Valencia, which ended the game with nine men on Sunday.
The result means Valencia stays third on 46 points and Atletico moves up to 11th on 30.
David Silva put Valencia ahead in the 20th minute, dribbling round goalkeeper David de Gea.
Forlan equalized with a penalty in the 30th after Carlos Marchena was ruled to have handled the ball in the area. Referee Perez Burrull did not punish the infraction until Atletico's players persuaded him to consult with the fourth official.
Sergio Aguero gave Atletico the lead with a header from a Simao Sabrosa corner in the 78th, his 50th career Spanish league goal. Forlan scored again in the 85th and Jose Manuel Jurado added the fourth in injury time.
On Saturday, Barcelona beat Malaga 2-1 to stay top. Real Madrid had led the standings temporarily by winning 5-1 at Tenerife earlier.
Barcelona is on 61 points and Real second on 59 points.
Sevilla was held 0-0 at home to Athletic Bilbao, leaving it fourth on 43, three ahead of Real Mallorca, which won 2-1 at Real Valladolid.
