Bayern looks to van Gaal

BAYERN Munich has drawn up a short list of possible new coaches, according to club president Franz Beckenbauer, and Louis van Gaal appears to be one of the main candidates.

Van Gaal secured the Dutch championship with AZ Alkmaar this season, and Beckenbauer described him as an excellent coach.

"He's shown that often enough, with the Dutch national team, with Barcelona, with Ajax," Beckenbauer told the DSF sports television channel on Friday.

Beckenbauer did not explicitly name van Gaal as the top candidate but spoke in glowing terms about the Dutchman. "We went through a list of coaches at the start of the week, we cut it short relatively quickly and now we'll establish contact. We'll see what comes out of it in the next few weeks," Beckenbauer said.

Bayern fired Juergen Klinsmann last Monday and hired veteran Jupp Heynckes to guide the team in the last five games of the season, with a new coach to be signed after that.

Kicker magazine reported on Thursday that van Gaal was the top candidate for the job.
