Bayern mulls Toni sale to buy peace
ITALIAN striker Luca Toni could be on his way out of Bayern Munich, club president Uli Hoeness said on Sunday.
Toni has hardly featured this season, missing much of the early part due to a heel injury before falling out with coach Louis van Gaal over his substitute role.
"I do not know what will happen with Luca," Hoeness told DSF television. "We still do not have any specific offer but we are prepared to loan him or sell him because we want the team to be calm.
"His issue will continue to draw media attention and that does not bring the tranquility we want."
Toni, who scored 24 league goals in his first season in Germany to help Bayern win the 2008 Bundesliga title, was fined last month when he drove home after being substituted at halftime against Schalke 04. The 32-year-old, whose contract runs until 2011, has repeatedly said he wants to return to Italy to get matches under his belt in the hope of playing in next year's World Cup.
Meanwhile, 10-man Hamburg SV moved to within four points of the top at the start of the winter break with a 2-1 victory over northern rival Werder Bremen.
Hamburg's Joris Mathijsen grabbed the lead on nine minutes on a freezing day and Marcell Jansen made it 2-0 in the 36th four minutes after Jerome Boateng was sent off for a foul on Marko Marin. Naldo pulled one back for Bremen in stoppage time.
Schalke 04 stayed in second, a point off the pace while Bayern crushed Hertha Berlin 5-2 on Saturday to remain in third on 33. The season resumes on January 15.
In France, 18-year-old sensation Eden Hazard scored a goal and set up two in Lille's 3-0 victory over Le Mans on Sunday.
The victory allowed Lille to leapfrog Montpellier and move into third place with 31 points, one clear of fourth-place Lyon which drew with Monaco 1-1.
