BAYERN Munich routed Borussia Dortmund 5-1 on the road yesterday for its second straight victory, while Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen both won to open a four-point lead in the Bundesliga.
Hamburg beat Stuttgart 3-1 and Leverkusen won 3-2 at defending champion Wolfsburg, which dropped its third straight.
Thomas Mueller came off the bench to score two goals for Bayern one day before his 20th birthday, with Mario Gomez, Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger adding the others as Bayern rallied after conceding an early goal.
Simon Rolfes scored two goals for Leverkusen in Wolfsburg in a match both teams finished with 10 men.
After five rounds, Hamburg and Leverkusen top the standings with 13 points, with Hamburg ahead on goal difference.
Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-0 at promoted Freiburg to remain unbeaten and take third place at nine points, one more than Bayern.
Hoffenheim beat Bochum 3-0 and promoted Mainz came from behind to edge Hertha Berlin 2-1 as both joined Bayern at eight points.
Also, Nuremberg beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0.
In Hamburg, Eljero Elia provided the pass for Mladen Petric's goal in the 39th and then hit one himself in the 58th. Petric struck the roof of the net with a left-foot shot from 22 meters (yards), while Elia drove a low effort from 25 past Stuttgart's goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
Stuttgart pulled one back when Pavel Pogrebnyak collected a pass from Christian Traesch to finish a Stuttgart counterattack. But Ze Roberto secured Hamburg's victory in the final minute after Zdravko Kuzmanovic lost the ball in midfield.
Dortmund, unbeaten in the previous 19 home games, had a fast start and Bayern goalkeeper Joerg Butt made two early saves form Mohamed Zidan before Mats Hummels headed in a free kick from Nuri Sahin in the 10th minute.
But Dortmund could not keep up the high pace and Bayern tied the game in the 36th. Bayern's Daniel van Buyten and Dortmund's Neven Subotic both rose to clear a free kick from Schweinsteiger, but the ball bounced off their shoulders to the far post, where Gomez headed home from three meters (yards).
Bayern's coach Louis van Gaal took Gomez off in the second half and sent in Ribery and Mueller, who replaced Hamit Altintop.
Ribery created Bayern's go-ahead goal by sending back a ball from the right. Ivica Olic failed to connect but Schweinsteiger fired it home.
Ribery scored himself with a perfect free kick from 20 meters (yards) in the 65th, then ran across the field to jump into an embrace with van Gaal. The two have had a rocky relationship since van Gaal's arrival this season.
Mueller completed the victory with two powerful shots from the edge of the penalty area.
"If we always play like we did in the second half, we can go far this season," Schweinsteiger said.
Dortmund fell to its second loss of the season.
"At some point during the game we lost the belief that we can win," Dortmund's coach Juergen Klopp said.
Wolfsburg's coach Armin Veh left striker Edin Dzeko on the bench for Obafemi Martins, breaking up the powerful partnership between Dzeko and Grafite, who combined for a Bundesliga record 54 goals last season.
Wolfsburg lost goalkeeper Diego Benaglio in the 32nd when he was sent off for two-foot tackle on Eren Derdiyok. He was replaced by Andre Lenz and Veh had to take out Makoto Hasebe.
Leverkusen quickly took advantage and Rolfes scored seven minutes later. Lenz parried shots by Derdiyok and Stefan Kiessling but Rolfes knocked in the third rebound.
Rolfes converted a penalty before Kiessling brought his season total to a league-high five goals by scoring Leverkusen's third, shortly after Derdiyok had received his second booking of the game to leave the visiting team also with 10 men.
Zvjezdan Misimovic drove in a free kick in the 76th and Grafite converted a penalty four minutes later. Dzeko came on in the second half and earned the penalty but Wolfsburg could not score another to prevent the defeat.
The defending champion has conceded 10 goals in its last three games and Veh will begin to feel the heat. He inherited an unchanged team from Felix Magath, who left after winning the championship to coach Schalke.
