Bayern tops Inter in Shanghai duel

A SOLE Mario Goetze strike helped Bayern Munich beat Inter Milan 1-0 in a friendly at Shanghai Stadium last night.

Bayern’s starting line-up was awash with star names, including Thomas Mueller, Philipp Lahm, Xabi Alonso, Jerome Boateng, and Manuel Neuer, while Roberto Mancini unveiled some of Inter’s newcomers, including Jeison Murillo and Martin Montoya.

However, fans had to wait 80 minutes before they saw the first and only goal of the match when Goetze latched on to a long pass from Sebastian Rode and overcame Inter goalie Juan Pablo Carrizo in a one-on-one situation.

The German champion had an upper hand with regards to the number of supporters that turned up at Shanghai Stadium last night and it dominated the first half while the Italians gave full play to their defensive skills. Mueller’s shot in the 44th went slightly wide of the post as the teams took half-time 0-0.

Both sides made a string of substitutions in the second half before Goetze stepped up to net the decider. It was Bayern’s second friendly victory in China after beating Spain’s Valencia 4-1 in Beijing last Saturday.

Inter manager Mancini said earlier that he wanted to test his new squad in the preseason after the team brought in new players like Frenchmen Jonathan Biabiany, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Brazilian defender Miranda.

“With all the new transfers, I hope Inter will win the league title and European championship again,” said the Italian.

Apart from preparing for the new season, building a good image among overseas fans is also an important task for top-tier European teams during their Asia tour. Both Bayern and Inter enjoy a big fan base in China.

Inter captain Andrea Ranocchia and the team’s retired legend “Il Capitano” Javier Zanetti showed up together at the Inter-Pirelli 20-Year Picture Exhibition in Pudong yesterday morning to interact with fans.

Zanetti, who holds a record 858 official appearances for the Italian side, is currently vice president of the club, whose duties include maintaining relations with the club fans.

“I never thought about joining another team in my career,” the Argentine said, expressing his loyalty towards Nerazzurri. “We have a time difference (with China), but we know that China has a lot of Inter fans. We always have confidence that Inter will become Europe’s top team again and create another legend.”
