Bayern tops Nuremberg in tough tie
Defending champion Bayern Munich ground out a hard-fought 2-0 win over Nuremberg to maintain its winning start to the German Bundesliga yesterday.
Franck Ribery met Philipp Lahm’s cross with a fine header to break the deadlock in the 69th minute, and Arjen Robben sealed the result when he eluded three defenders and scored through the goalkeeper’s legs in the 78th.
Bayern toiled to break down the Nuremberg defense, however, in what was the 187th derby between the sides.
Schalke’s poor season start continued with a 1-2 loss at Hannover, where the visitors finished with nine players and the hosts 10.
Bayer Leverkusen beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-2, and SC Freiburg drew 3-3 at Hoffenheim, where three players were sent off.
VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo was sent off in a 0-2 defeat at Mainz.
Leverkusen, with nine points from three games, leads the standings on goal difference from treble winner Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.
On Friday, Dortmund also made it three wins out of three Bundesliga games when it edged Werder Bremen 1-0 thanks to striker Robert Lewandowski’s second goal of the season.
The Pole, who tried to secure a move to Bayern in the close season but has settled his differences with Dortmund after a generous pay rise, tapped in 10 minutes after the restart.
