Bellamy heads to Cardiff on loan

CRAIG Bellamy joined second-tier Cardiff on a season-long loan yesterday after being frozen out by big-spending Manchester City.

The 31-year-old striker is dropping down a division after falling out with manager Roberto Mancini and with City unwilling to sell one of its top performers from last season to a Premier League rival.

"It has been my dream to play my part in taking my hometown club to the Premier League, which would be fantastic for the football club, the city of Cardiff and Wales," Bellamy said.

City, which is chasing a top-four finish to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, has spent more than 100 million pounds (US$157 million) reinforcing its squad since May's fifth-place finish. And there would have been no space for Bellamy in City's Premier League squad with new rules forcing the club to name a 25-man squad by September 1.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones said Bellamy's arrival "is another big step in the development of this football club." The Wales captain could make his debut for Cardiff against Doncaster in the League Championship on Saturday.
