Benevento alone in Europe sans a point

BENEVENTO remained the only club in Europe’s top five leagues without a point after losing at basement rival Hellas Verona 0-1 in Serie A on Monday.

Romulo scored with a long volley to conclude a counterattack in the 74th minute.

Benevento center back Luca Antei was shown a direct red card for a sliding tackle late in the first half and Verona striker Giampaolo Pazzini nearly took advantage when he hit the post.

With its first win of the season, Verona moved up to 16th place with six points.

Benevento has lost all eight matches, conceding 19 goals.

All of the top-division squads in England, France, Germany and Spain have earned at least a point.

Meanwhile, Cagliari’s Massimo Rastelli has become the first coach fired in Serie A this season.

The move comes two days after a 2-3 home loss to previously winless Genoa left Cagliari in 14th place with six points.

It was the Sardinian club’s sixth loss in eight matches, fourth straight defeat and third consecutive at home.

It’s the longest the Italian league has gone without a firing since 1998, when Luigi Simoni was sacked by Inter Milan after the 11th round.

In a statement, Cagliari thanked Rastelli for leading the club to the Serie B title in 2016 and an 11th-place finish in the top division last season.

Former Pescara coach Massimo Oddo and Giuseppe Iachini, who last season managed Palermo and Udinese, are being touted as possible replacements.
