Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro will remain with the team at the Confederations Cup despite the death of his grandfather.
Cannavaro was told of his family's loss moments after Italy lost to Egypt 0-1 on Thursday.
"He was very close to his grandfather, but the funeral was already this morning," Italy team spokesman Diego Antenozio said yesterday.
Cannavaro left Ellis Park with his head low and tears in his eyes.
"He just got a call right now telling him that his grandfather died," Antenozio said on Thursday.
Italy closes group play against Brazil on Sunday. Cannavaro needs to make only two more matches for Italy to break Paolo Maldini's national team record of 126 appearances.
