Besiktas turns to coach Bilic
CROATIAN Slaven Bilic has agreed to become coach of Istanbul's Besiktas, the Turkish club said yesterday.
The former Croatian national team coach will take over at Besiktas after recently leaving Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow.
Bilic will be denied the chance to compete in the Europa League next season after UEFA banned Besiktas from the competition for a year for its involvement in a domestic match-fixing scandal.
Fellow Turkish club Fenerbahce was banned from the Champions League, the second time in three seasons. The club was banished from the 2011-12 Champions League after the initial fixing allegations were made.
Besiktas said Bilic would be paid 4.7 million euros (US$6.14 million) over the three years.
Meanwhile, new coach Carlo Ancelotti was presented as "a true sage" of football by Real Madrid President Florentino Perez yesterday.
Ancelotti was introduced to Real members and the press at the Santiago Bernabeu by Perez in a step aimed at healing the rifts caused by predecessor Jose Mourinho.
Speaking in Spanish, the 54-year-old Italian said he was "happy to be at the most prestigious club in the world".
Ancelotti received a three-year contract on Tuesday. He said he was aware Real was "a club that needs to win by playing spectacular football".
He added he was going to work to ensure the club would deliver the style of football that its fans anticipated.
Former player Zinedine Zidane of France was at the introduction, although it was not immediately clear what his role would be.
