Bilbao's winning run ends at Mallorca
ATHLETIC Bilbao squandered a chance to put pressure on fourth placed Villarreal when it lost 0-1 at Real Mallorca in La Liga on Monday.
The Basque club had won its last four games to climb to fifth and Villarreal's 0-1 defeat at Deportivo Coruna on Sunday had it dreaming of cutting the gap to four points and challenging for a place in the Champions League.
Instead, Pierre Webo netted the only goal at the Iberostar stadium when he tapped in Emilio Nsue's center in the 11th minute.
Bilbao has 38 points from 23 matches, seven behind Villarreal and one ahead of Espanyol, which lost 0-1 at home to 10-man Real Madrid on Sunday.
Barcelona, which drew 1-1 at Sporting Gijon on Saturday, leads the standings with 62 points to Real's 57.
Meanwhile, Osasuna has appointed Jose Luis Mendilibar as coach in place of Jose Antonio Camacho who was sacked on Monday after the La Liga club lost 0-1 at Real Sociedad to slip into the relegation places. The 49-year-old Mendilibar, former coach of Athletic Bilbao and Valladolid, has agreed a contract until the end of next season.
He helped Valladolid back into the top flight as second division champion in 2007 and led it to 15th and 16th-placed finishes before being sacked last February.
Osasuna President Pachi Izco said it had been a difficult decision to get rid of Camacho, a former Spain coach, but one that had been taken at the right time despite the home win over Real Madrid at the end of last month.
"The recent run of results has not been good and in football the results are what count," Izco said.
