Black Cats’ Van Aanholt withdrawn over heart tests

DUTCH defender Patrick van Aanholt’s late withdrawal from the Sunderland squad to face Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was due to medical advice after cardiology test results, manager David Moyes has revealed.

Van Aanholt was replaced by substitute Jason Denayer shortly before the kickoff in Sunderland’s 0-1 defeat against Spurs at White Hart Lane in London on Sunday.

The 26-year-old has featured in five games in all competitions for Sunderland this season, and will travel to face Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup today.

“He had the statutory checks with the cardiologists,” Moyes told reporters yesterday. “The (English) Football Association panel advised us really late that he should not play until further tests had taken place.

“I can categorically say that all conspiracy theories are incorrect. It was completely out of our control. We had to make the correct decision for the player and for the football club.”

Moyes said he “just can’t understand” why Sunderland were advised not to field Van Aanholt at such short notice.

Van Aanholt has since undergone further tests. Though he will travel with the squad for the QPR game, Moyes said he had not yet decided whether or not the former Chelsea player will play.

“He’s had some further tests and will travel to London with us, and we will make a decision on that a little bit later,” the Scot said.
