Blackburn draw dents United's title hopes

MANCHESTER United suffered a third major blow in eight days yesterday when a 0-0 draw at Blackburn Rovers damaged its hopes of claiming a fourth consecutive English Premier League title.

United, which went out of the Champions League on away goals to Bayern Munich last Wednesday, failed to break down a resolute Rovers side which means it remains stuck behind leader Chelsea having played a game more.

Chelsea has 74 points from 33 games while United, whose 1-2 defeat at home to Chelsea last weekend cost it top spot, has 73 from 34 games. Arsenal has 71 from 33.

With leading scorer Wayne Rooney missing after re-injuring his ankle against Bayern, United started with Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda up front but neither made much impact.

On Saturday, financially troubled Portsmouth was relegated from the Premier League on the eve of its FA Cup semifinal after West Ham United beat Sunderland 1-0.

Miserable season

If Portsmouth beats Tottenham Hotspur it would end a miserable season by facing Chelsea in the final after the Cup holder beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the first semifinal.

Portsmouth's fate was effectively sealed last month when, already bottom of the standings, the Premier League docked the 2008 FA Cup winner nine points for seeking bankruptcy protection - a result of overspending on player transfers and salaries.

Striker Ilan scored in the 51st minute to clinch for West Ham the win that left Portsmouth 17 points from safety with 15 possible to win.

In Saturday's only other Premier League match, Burnley moved past Hull City in the relegation zone by coming from behind to win 4-1 against its opponent. Both teams remain on 27 points - four behind Wigan Athletic and West Ham.

At Wembley, Didier Drogba took until the 68th to put Chelsea ahead against a stubborn Villa, turning in John Terry's left-footed drive which appeared to be going wide.

Florent Malouda side-footed home a right-wing cross from Michael Ballack in the 89th and Frank Lampard added a third in injury time after a Chelsea breakaway.
