Blues, Reading advance in Cup
FA Cup holder Chelsea booked its place in the fifth round with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Championship (second division) side Preston North End yesterday.
The five-time winner took the lead when Nicolas Anelka shot powerfully past keeper Andy Lonergan in the 36th minute before doubling its advantage when Daniel Sturridge finished from close range two minutes after the restart.
Host Preston, which is managed by Darren Ferguson, son of Manchester United boss Alex, missed a gilt-edged chance when Darren Carter shot over an open goal in the first half.
In the day's other early cup match, League Championship side Reading, which ousted Liverpool in the third round, triumphed over English Premier League opposition again by beating Burnley 1-0 courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson's 87th-minute goal.
Among the matches later in the day, third-tier Leeds United was at Tottenham Hotspur looking to repeat its shock win over United earlier this month.
In Germany, Ciprian Marica's goal late in the first half was enough for VfB Stuttgart to collect a 1-0 victory at SC Freiburg and continue its strong run in the Bundesliga on Friday.
The Champions League side collected its third straight win and extended its unbeaten streak to five games.
Christian Gross' team improved to 22 points from 19 rounds, moving to 11th place in the league.
Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich played his third game as the replacement for the suspended Jens Lehmann.
Freiburg was unable to clear some space from the relegation zone with its third loss in a row for 18 points and 15th in the standings. Robin Dutt's team has not scored in its last four games.
