Bochum exits drop zone with victory

VFL Bochum moved out of the relegation zone and left behind Borussia Moenchengladbach with a 1-0 victory in the German Bundesliga on Friday.

Dennis Grote's goal in the 29th minute decided the game for Bochum, which has never lost in the league to Moenchengladbach.

Bochum won the crucial relegation battle for its first victory on the road, earning 25 points after 25 rounds. Moenchengladbach remained in the drop zone with 22 points for 16th place.

"We kept calm in the last few minutes and that was the key. And these are three important points for us," Bochum coach Marcel Koller said.

Moenchengladbach came into the game with two straight victories and three in its last four.

"We tried a lot today but we only lost 1-0," team boss Hans Meyer said. "And now the excellent victory over Cologne means less. It's bitter but I don't blame the team today. We played really well."

The host opened as the more dangerous team with better chances over the first 25 minutes.

But it was Bochum which grabbed the lead when Diego Klimowicz passed over to a charging Grote, who unleashed a 20-meter flat blast to the far right corner past Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Logan Bailly.

Moenchengladbach was the more dominant side for the rest of the game but could not convert opportunities, including three chances in the final five minutes.
