Bolton ousts Brums from Cup
BOLTON Wanderers ended Birmingham City's dream of an FA and League Cup double when South Korean Lee Chung-yong headed home in the 90th minute to secure a 3-2 win in their FA Cup quarterfinal yesterday.
Birmingham, which beat Arsenal in the League Cup final last month, twice came from behind at St. Andrews but had no reply to Lee's winner which put Bolton into the semifinals for the first time since 2000 when it lost to Aston Villa.
Bolton went ahead when Johan Elmander scored with a powerful strike after 21 minutes before Cameron Jerome equalized for the home side with a low shot that beat Jussi Jaaskelainen at his near post after 38 minutes.
Kevin Davies restored Bolton's lead from the penalty spot after he was toppled in a clumsy challenge by Curtis Davies after 66 minutes, before Birmingham equalized for a second time 14 minutes later.
Kevin Phillips took the goal brilliantly, lifting a high ball over Jaaskelainen from the edge of the box, a minute after he had hit the post with another long-range effort.
Manchester United was meeting Arsenal in the second quarterfinal last night while Manchester City plays Reading and Stoke City takes on West Ham United today.
In Italy, Brescia striker Andrea Caracciolo was involved in plenty of late drama as the home side held second-placed Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw in Serie A on Friday.
Samuel Eto'o struck from close range to give the champion an early lead and after the hosts missed a succession of chances in the second half Caracciolo finally equalized five minutes from time.
The same player then missed a penalty in the 90th minute before being sent off in stoppage time. Inter's Ivan Cordoba had also been dismissed in the closing stages.
Inter is now four points behind leader AC Milan, which hosts Bari today.
Brescia goalkeeper Michele Arcari was powerless in the 18th when Eto'o latched on to Andrea Ranocchia's flick to volley his 19th league goal of the campaign.
Colombian defender Cordoba misdirected a header to allow Caracciolo to score and then received his marching orders for upending Eder.
Caracciolo's spot kick was saved by Julio Cesar before the Brescia striker completed an eventful evening when he was shown a second yellow card deep into injury time.
