Bordeaux ends year as winter champion
CHAMPION Girondins Bordeaux ended the year in style with a 2-1 victory at Toulouse on Wednesday to enter the winter break nine points clear at the top of Ligue 1.
The match was decided 15 minutes from time when Toulouse defender Cheikh M'Bengue was sent off for a second booking. Brazilian midfielder Wendel converted the resulting free-kick from the edge of the box to give Bordeaux the points.
Portugal midfielder Paulo Machado had put Toulouse ahead after four minutes but Girondins responded through Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh four minutes later.
"We've had a truly great year," Chamakh told French television channel Orange Sport. "What we have to do now is carry on with the same spirit. I believe we can."
Lille extended its impressive run with a crushing 4-0 win at Nancy to move up a place to second. Lille's sixth consecutive league victory, with at least three goals scored in each, took it to 34 points also from 19 games.
Belgian winger Eden Hazard collected a Gervinho pass and turned inside the area to open the scoring just before the break. Gervinho, with two goals, and fellow striker Pierre-Alain Frau, from a penalty, completed the rout in the second half.
Olympique Marseille dropped two places to fourth, 11 points off the pace, after a 0-2 home defeat by Auxerre. Kenya forward Dennis Oliech scored in each half for the visitors who moved up to fifth, joining their opponents on 32 points.
"This is hard to swallow," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps told reporters. "We were just not there. This will ruin my holidays."
Olympique Lyon saw its hopes of recapturing the title it lost last May hit by a 1-2 home loss to Montpellier. The visitors are now in third place 10 points off the pace albeit, like Marseille, with a game in hand on the leading pair.
Seven-time champion Lyon slipped to sixth, 13 points behind Bordeaux.
Ligue 1 restarts on January 16.
