POLAND striker Ireneusz Jelen scored twice for Auxerre which moved up to third in French Ligue 1 after a 2-1 win at leader Girondins Bordeaux on Wednesday.
Defender Benoit Tremoulinas put Bordeaux ahead with a shot that took a deflection off Auxerre midfielder Benoit Pedretti on six minutes.
Auxerre, which had beaten Bordeaux 1-0 earlier this season, stepped up a gear after the break and leveled on 64 minutes courtesy of Jelen, who was on target again seven minutes from time when he headed home the winner after his shot bounced off the crossbar.
Bordeaux, which has looked below par in recent outings and had been held to a 1-1 home draw by Montpellier last Sunday, failed to use one of the two games it had in hand to move clear and stayed on 52 points, now from 26 games.
"This is a bad evening for us," Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc said. "The players gave everything they had against Montpellier at 10 against 11 and we ran out of fuel."
Montpellier, back in the top flight this season after a long spell in the second division, lies second on goal difference, with Auxerre, which has also played one more game than Bordeaux, one point off the pace.
In England, Burnley remained in the Premier League relegation zone after a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City on Wednesday earned it its first point in five games.
Mid-table Stoke went ahead with yet another goal from its long throw-in routine, Tuncay Sanli getting the finishing touch to Rory Delap's aerial delivery.
David Nugent's header put Burnley level after 52 minutes but the hosts could not find the winner that would have lifted them out of the bottom three.
Burnley is third from bottom with 24 points from 29 games, behind Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference and five ahead of last-place Portsmouth.
