Bradford surprises Villa in League Cup
ASTON Villa manager Paul Lambert said his side must make the most of home advantage if it is to stand any chance of turning around its League Cup semifinal with Bradford City.
The Premier League relegation candidates sank to a 1-3 defeat at Bradford on Tuesday as the League Two club moved to within 90 minutes of becoming the first fourth-tier side to reach a League Cup final since Rochdale in 1962.
Villa started the game strongly but was robbed of its momentum when Nehki Wells put the hosts in front in the 19th minute.
The visitors were unable to recover, with late headers from Rory McArdle and Carl McHugh taking Bradford to within sight of Wembley despite Andreas Weimann replying for Villa.
Asked if his side would start the January 22 second leg as favorites despite its two-goal deficit, Lambert replied: "I'm pretty sure we will be, being at home with the crowd behind us, but it is a big game for us now."
Victory over Villa maintained Bradford's incredible record in this season's competition, after wins over Wigan Athletic and Arsenal in previous rounds.
In Italy, Lazio advanced to the Italian Cup semifinals with a 3-0 win over Catania.
Romania defender Stefan Radu put Lazio ahead in the 30th minute with a header from a corner, and Brazil playmaker Hernanes scored twice, in the 61st and 90th, getting set up both times by Sergio Floccari.
In Spain, Valencia reached the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey after goals by Tino Costa and Roberto Soldado gave it a 2-1 win against Osasuna, putting the club through 4-1 on aggregate. Earlier, Malaga came from behind to win 4-1 against third-tier club Eibar, advancing 5-2 on aggregate.
