Brazil won’t appeal Neymar ban

BRAZIL said yesterday it will not appeal against a four-match ban on captain Neymar which will rule him out of the rest of the Copa America tournament.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said the Barcelona superstar would leave the team base in Santiago.

“During a meeting on Sunday night between Neymar and the technical management it was decided that the CBF would respect CONMEBOL’s decision,” said a CBF statement.

Neymar was sent off at the end of Brazil’s Copa game against Colombia last Wednesday when he appeared to headbutt an opposing player.

The South American confederation, CONMEBOL, banned him for four matches on Friday. Brazil had indicated it wanted to appeal and protested at Neymar’s treatment by referees during the Copa.

“The coaching staff and the player hope that the same rigor with which CONMEBOL punished Neymar will be applied in all competitions organized by the entity,” the statement added.

“The coaching staff of the Brazilian squad regret the loss of another important player for this tournament.”

The Brazilian squad said: “Neymar is leaving the delegation which is based at the Sheraton hotel in Santiago on Monday.”

Brazil ensured it went into the quarterfinals as the top team from Group C by beating Venezuela 2-1 on Sunday. It will now face Group B runner-up Paraguay on Saturday.

Coach Dunga fielded Robinho in Neymar’s place against Venezuela and, for much of the game, the Brazilians played with a fluidity they had lacked against Colombia. Brazil lost that match 0-1, its first defeat in 12 games.

Meanwhile, Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said the loss of midfielder Edwin Valencia midway through the first half was a turning in point in the team’s 0-0 draw with Peru on Sunday.

Colombia scraped through as the second-best third-placed team to a quarterfinal against Group B winner Argentina on Friday.

Peru had the same goal difference as Colombia but finished second in the group on goals scored and progressed to a quarterfinal with Bolivia, which was second to host Chile in Group A.

“We tried everything, Colombia always sought to win the match. We came close, in the first half we put a lot of pressure on Peru,” Pekerman told reporters. “But then we suffered an unexpected injury, inopportune, unfortunate. That’s always a difficult situation. Valencia was the nexus who made all our players fit together.”
