Bremen climbs to top with Wolfsburg draw

WERDER Bremen battled back with a stoppage-time goal from defender Per Mertesacker to draw 2-2 with champion VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday and go top of the German Bundesliga table on goal difference.

Wolfsburg thought it had won the game when Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko scored his second goal of the afternoon five minutes from time to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Mertesacker, though, rose above the Wolfsburg defense in stoppage time to head in the equalizer from a Mesut Ozil corner.

Bremen, unbeaten for 21 consecutive matches in all competitions, is on 27 points, the same as Bayer Leverkusen, which can go back on top with a win against VfB Stuttgart.

"We were not focused in defense and made it easy for our opponents," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said. "We had enough today chances to decide the match in our favor."

Schalke 04, third on 25 points, missed the chance to go top when it lost 0-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach - its first defeat since mid-September.

Hamburg failed to close in on the top when Mainz earned a 1-1 draw with an 84th-minute goal from Tim Hoogland. Hamburg is in fourth place, on 24 points.

Hoffenheim is fifth, a point behind, after losing to visiting Borussia Dortmund 1-2 to a 79th-minute penalty from Nuri Sahin.

In France, lowly Paris St Germain ended Auxerre's surprise Ligue 1 run by beating the leader 1-0 at Parc des Princes on Saturday.

Midfielder Jeremy Clement headed home a cross by Brazilian defender Ceara in the 67th to give PSG the points and move the capital club up a spot to 12th in the league.

PSG lost goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, who left the pitch on a stretcher six minutes from time after twisting his leg while trying to prevent a corner. He was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg and will be out for up to three months.

Burgundy side Auxerre, which had won its last seven games, is now under threat from champion Girondins Bordeaux and Olympique Lyon, both a point back before visiting Nancy and welcoming Stade Rennes, respectively, yesterday.

Lorient moved into second place, also a point off the lead, after needing a goal in added time from forward Kevin Gameiro to salvage a 2-2 home draw with Grenoble.
