British chill freezes ties
JUST two Premier League games were set to go ahead yesterday because of the freezing conditions ravaging Britain, with Wigan's home fixture against Aston Villa also called off hours before kickoff.
Five of the seven scheduled topflight matches were postponed with only Arsenal against Everton and Manchester United's trip to Birmingham set to go ahead.
Today's matches - Liverpool vs Tottenham and West Ham vs Wolverhampton - have also fallen victim to the coldest temperatures for more than 30 years in Britain.
Wigan's undersoil heating system broke down on Friday, and heavy overnight frost left the surface unplayable. In the other cases, the pitches were playable but there were safety concerns around the stadiums. Four matches scheduled yesterday - league leader Chelsea's trip to Hull, Fulham against Portsmouth, Burnley versus Stoke and Sunderland against Bolton - were postponed.
