Buenos Aires woos China players

ARGENTINA’S capital Buenos Aires will offer city subsidies to football clubs that recruit Chinese players, Mayor Mauricio Macri said on Thursday.

“We know that football can do a lot to build bridges between societies. That’s why we’re launching this initiative, with the idea of continuing to create exchange opportunities with a country as important as China,” Macri said.

The comments from Macri — who has announced his intention to run for Argentina’s presidency in 2015 — came after a meeting with the presidents of the city’s main clubs Boca Juniors, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Velez Sarsfield.

Macri, a former Boca president, did not offer specifics about the subsidy amount. “We can only imagine the impact for any Argentine club that acquiring name recognition and having fans in a country of 1.3 billion people would have.”

So far, no Chinese player has played for a division one team in Argentina.
