Burnley, Cologne are promoted
BURNLEY has secured promotion to the Premier League, returning to England’s top flight for the first time since 2010.
Burnley beat Wigan 2-0 on Monday to secure a top-two finish in the second-tier League Championship, joining Leicester in gaining automatic promotion to the Premier League next season. Ashley Barnes and Michael Kightly scored in the first half as Burnley stayed eight points ahead of third-place Derby with just two rounds to go.
With a population of less than 90,000, Burnley will be the smallest town with a Premier League club.
In Germany, Cologne defeated Bochum 3-1 at home to secure its return to the Bundesliga after two years in the second division.
Cologne, which was relegated from the top flight on the final day of the 2011-12 season, has an unassailable 10-point lead over second-place Greuther Fuerth with three games remaining.
