CFA vote of confidence for Fu
Chinese national team caretaker coach Fu Bo will remain in his position until at least November, the Chinese Football Association decided yesterday after a meeting with its coaching committee.
Fu took over from Spaniard Jose Antonio Camacho in June. His main task will be to lead the Chinese team for three Asian Cup qualifying matches in November, as well as two friendly encounters in September.
China was ranked 95th in the latest FIFA world rankings, climbing five positions compared to the previous list.
Despite a humiliating 1-5 defeat to Thailand in a friendly which accelerated the dismissal of then head coach Camacho, the team gave a promising display under caretaker coach Fu during last month’s East Asia Cup by drawing with Asian giants Japan and South Korea and beating Australia, and losing out on the title on points.
The CFA will start the official process to recruit a new head coach for the national team after November.
Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation has confirmed receiving applications from eight nations to host the 2019 Asian Cup. Along with China, football associations of Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates will be invited for a seminar in Kuala Lumpur in September while inspections start in October.
China hosted the 2004 Asian Cup in the four cities of Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing and Jinan. It advanced to the final but lost out to Japan.
