Cahill to decide on future in July
TIM Cahill says that any decision regarding his career — and whether he will stay in China or otherwise — will be made next month.
“It will all be clear next month. Everything has a process,” the Australian striker said when asked about his future plans, including likely retirement.
“No rush, whatever my wife and kids want to do, that’s what we will do.”
Cahill was talking after a stage show of his own brand CAHILLPLUS in Shanghai on Monday — 24 hours after his current team Hangzhou Greentown was whitewashed 0-4 by his former club Shanghai Greenland Shenhua on Sunday.
Shenhua players Demba Ba, Obafemi Martins, Wang Yun and Geng Xiaofeng were in attendance at the CAHILLPLUS fashion show.
The match result may not have been pleasing, but Cahill was glad to meet his old teammates at Hongkou Football Stadium, as well as local fans, some of whom still cheered for him. After the game, he stayed back and left the stadium along with Senegal forward Ba for a “catch up”.
Shenhua ended its contract with the Australian early prior to the start of the Chinese Super League season, sparing a foreign-player quota for Nigerian striker Martins. Cahill then reached a six-month deal with Greentown in Hangzhou, which is two hours away from Shanghai. His family still resides in Shanghai.
Though the 36-year-old did not say whether he will stay in China, the former Everton player did unveil his plans after retirement. “After football, I’d like to study. As a footballer, you don’t only have to play sport. You can do academically well, too,” he revealed.
