Cahill to leave Greentown
HANGZHOU Greentown announced yesterday that it has decided to end its contract with Australian midfielder Tim Cahill early.
“After long communication with Tim Cahill, we understand and support Cahill’s decision to take better care of his family, and have therefore decided to end his contract early,” the club said in a statement on its official account on Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging site. “Cahill showed a most professional attitude during his half a year in Hangzhou. He was fully devoted to the matches and training. We wish him good luck in his career.”
The former Shanghai Shenhua player joined Hangzhou as a free agent earlier this year. His contract was due to end at the end of this month. He scored three goals in 17 appearances for Hangzhou.
“This has been an incredibly difficult decision to leave Hangzhou,” the Australian wrote on his Weibo blog. “This decision is based on me wanting to be with my family. The president (of Hangzhou Greentown FC) offered me an amazing contract to stay and I know he will continue to make this club great. I will miss him and my Chinese brothers.”
Reports suggested that the 36-year-old has agreed a deal in principle with Melbourne City FC in Australia’s A-League.
David Gallop, the chief executive of the Football Federation of Australia, said negotiations were under way with the former Everton forward, who is likely to feature as a guest player for Melbourne.
“All I can say at the moment is we’re having positive talks, on going with Tim,” Gallop was quoted as saying on the A-League website yesterday.
