Camoranesi brace sparks Juventus past Atalanta

MAURO Camoranesi struck twice in two minutes to set second-placed Juventus on its way to a 5-2 win at Serie A struggler Atalanta on Saturday.

The Italy midfielder glided between the back line to head his side ahead in the 36th minute and then thumped in a loose ball for his third goal in two games after scoring in last Tuesday's 1-0 victory at Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League.

Jaime Valdes pulled one back after the break for the Bergamo side trained by Antonio Conte, a contender for the job in Turin in the close season before his old Juve teammate Ciro Ferrara was promoted from caretaker to permanent coach.

Brazil midfielder Felipe Melo restored the visitors' cushion with a piledriver into the corner from well outside the box.

Atalanta's Fabio Ceravolo exposed the defensive fragility behind Juve's recent inconsistency in Serie A in the 71st, stepping inside his marker before curling the ball inside the far post.

But Diego and David Trezeguet were on target in the closing stages to wrap up a victory that gives Juve 24 points from 12 games, four points adrift of Inter Milan, which was entertaining AS Roma last night.

Earlier in the day's other match, Napoli was held 0-0 at second-from-bottom Catania.

In France, Grenoble picked up its first point of the Ligue 1 season with a goalless draw at Monaco on Saturday to avoid matching Manchester United's record of the worst start in a major European league.

The bottom club kept Monaco at bay after 11 consecutive defeats. United's 1930-31 team lost its first 12 games.

Guy Lacombe's Monaco dropped to fourth in the standings with 22 points from 12 matches, three points behind leader Girondins Bordeaux, which was at Lille last night.

AJ Auxerre bagged its sixth successive victory to jump to third on 23 points with a 1-0 win at Le Mans.
