Cannavaro future as coach in doubt after another loss

Fabio Cannavaro鈥檚 short reign as China coach could already be over after the hosts were beaten for the second time in five days yesterday and again failed to score.

The World Cup winner was put in charge 10 days ago, but local media had speculated that the China Cup amounted to an audition to be fellow Italian Marcello Lippi鈥檚 long-term successor.

If that was the case, the 45-year-old legendary defender fluffed his lines.

The home side followed up last Thursday鈥檚 0-1 loss to Thailand with another disjointed display in the four-team tournament, going down 0-1 to lower-ranked Uzbekistan.

In front of a sparse crowd for the mid-afternoon match in Nanning, south China鈥檚 Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China failed to muster a shot on target and there was a smattering of jeers at the final whistle.

Former Juventus and Real Madrid star Cannavaro, who is also coach of Guangzhou Evergrande, said afterward that he would hold talks with the Chinese Football Association and the Chinese Super League club.

鈥淏ut until now the CFA hasn鈥檛 made any clear statement about the appointment,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 have said before: Taking over the national football team can be a very big challenge. The bigger the challenge, the greater the passion will be.

鈥淎s the national team is experiencing changes, we all have some concerns about the pace and degree of the changes.

鈥淚f (China) needs me, I will consider it, but who can be the coach of the national team cannot be decided in one day.鈥

Juggling a top CSL job and the national side 鈥渋s difficult,鈥 Cannavaro admitted, after another meek defeat that left China 鈥 which has ambitions to host a World Cup and become a major footballing force 鈥 bottom of the four sides in the China Cup.

鈥淲e still need to calm down and discuss it. If we cannot find a suitable way to cooperate, I will still coach Evergrande (only).鈥

Cannavaro made five changes to the side lucky to lose by just one goal to Thailand last week, but it only made China 鈥 missing the rested Espanyol forward Wu Lei 鈥 less effective.

The team was already on the back foot when forward Eldor Shomurodov took advantage of hesitant defending by Evergrande鈥檚 Zhang Linpeng on 35 minutes to lash the ball into the roof of the net for Uzbekistan, which is 89th in the FIFA rankings to China鈥檚 72nd.

Uzbekistan, soundly defeated 0-3 by Uruguay on Friday, was also the better team in the second half and should have extended its lead, but substitute Odil Ahmedov, who plays for CSL champion Shanghai SIPG, headed straight at goalkeeper Yan Junling.

Uruguay thumped Thailand 4-0 later in the final of the annual mini-tournament to retain the title as veteran defender Diego Godin became his country鈥檚 most capped player.

Godin captained the team on his 126th appearance to move ahead of Maxi Pereira on the all-time list.
