Cao strikes as Shenhua gets 1st win

STRIKER Cao Yunding scored late as Shanghai Shenhua beat Guangzhou R&F 1-0 at Hongkou Stadium last night to secure its first win of the Chinese Super League season.

It was Shenhua's French striker Nicolas Anelka, in his second CSL game, however, who was named player of the match.

"It was a tough game and R&F played very well in both offense and defense," said Shenhua coach Jean Tigana. "We didn't make a lot of mistakes in midfield and I'm satisfied with our team's first win in the league."

But the Frenchman said the team had a lot to improve upon, especially in midfield, which he believed is the weakest link in the team. "We could do better in midfield, especially the passes. I think this win will help boost the players' confidence."

Shenhua defender Dai Lin was seriously injured in the second half which caused the team to play with 10 men for the last 10 minutes as Tigana had already made his three substitutions.

Tigana replaced Feng Renliang, Yu Tao and Mario Bozic from his starting line-up, using Mathieu Manset and Joel Griffiths as the two forwards.

But the team had to wait until the 84th minute to find the elusive goal. Cao took a pass from substitute Mario Bozic and ran clear before chipping over the onrushing R&F goalkeeper.

Earlier, Shanghai Shenxin FC drew 0-0 with Guizhou Renhe to ensure that both Shanghai teams have four points from three games. Also, Liaoning Hongyun tied 3-3 with Changchun Yatai and Dalian Shide beat Qingdao Zhongneng 2-1.
