Cardiff reaches final, Tevez fined
SECOND tier Cardiff City beat 10-man Championship rival Crystal Palace 3-1 on penalties on Tuesday to secure a dream English League Cup final date at Wembley with Manchester City or Liverpool.
Palace had won its home leg 1-0 thanks to an Anthony Gardner goal and it was the defender who leveled the score on aggregate with a headed own-goal after just seven minutes at the City stadium. The visitors were reduced to 10 men when captain Patrick McCarthy was sent off for a second yellow with 13 minutes remaining.
Extra time failed to break the deadlock and the game went to penalties, despite Cardiff's Aron Gunnarsson hitting the bar in the final minute.
Palace missed its first two spot kicks with Cardiff goalkeeper Tim Heaton saving from Jermaine Easter and Sean Scannell to become his team's hero as it booked a trip to Wembley, where it lost the 2008 FA Cup final to Portsmouth.
"It's a great night for Cardiff City," Heaton told the BBC. "I was a spectator for much of the game and when I got involved it was great to play a part in getting us to Wembley."
Cardiff will learn who it will take on in next month's final yesterday when Premier League leader City travels to seven-time winner Liverpool, which won the first leg 1-0.
City striker Carlos Tevez, meanwhile, has been found guilty of gross misconduct and fined six weeks' wages after flying home to Argentina without permission, a club source said on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old, who has not played since refusing to warm up during a Champions League match in September, has angered the club with his prolonged absence since November and is looking to leave in this January transfer window.
"In response to speculation, the club confirms that Carlos Tevez was found guilty by a disciplinary hearing on 21 December of gross misconduct for serious breaches of contract and was fined six weeks' wages," the source said.
The source gave no financial details of the fine but local media have reported that Tevez is paid some 200,000 pounds (US$311,700) a week and that his fallout with City will cost him more than nine million pounds in fines and lost earnings and bonuses.
Tevez has been linked with a move away from City, with interest from AC Milan, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, but City has made it clear it will not accept any cut-price offers or loan deals.
