Carew brace salvages point for Villa
NORWAY striker John Carew scored twice as Aston Villa came from behind to salvage a point from a lively 2-2 draw at home to midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League yesterday.
Wolves were heading for their first victory for 30 years at Villa Park until Carew scored after 82 minutes as Villa grabbed a point in the race for fourth place and a possible European Champions League spot next season.
Carew had put Villa ahead in the 16th minute before a 23rd-minute strike from Jody Craddock and a 38th-minute own goal from James Milner turned the match.
The result left disappointed Villa trailing fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur (52 points), which was playing at Stoke City, by two points.
Wolves moved four points clear of the relegation zone, though fellow strugglers Burnley and Hull City were both in action later.
Villa manager Martin O'Neill suffered a pre-match blow when Gabriel Agbonlahor was ruled out with the groin injury suffered during the midweek win at Wigan
Meanwhile, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has set his sights on extending his stay in England and success with Spain at the World Cup finals this summer.
"At present, I am negotiating a contract extension with Liverpool. I want to be the best goalkeeper in the club's history," he told sports daily Marca yesterday.
While the undisputed No. 1 at Anfield, Reina has to content himself with being the back-up to Real Madrid's Iker Casillas with the Spanish national team.
"I accept it with resignation," he added. "It's good that in this national team we all accept our roles with grace. Spain has players of the highest quality."
After winning the European championship in 2008, Spain is being touted as one of the firm favorites to lift the World Cup trophy in South Africa in July this year.
"There's no point in denying it. But Germany, Italy and Brazil are as well," Reina said. "In a World Cup everything has to go to perfection if you want to be champion. (It wouldn't be a failure if we didn't win). Failure would be to not make it out of the group stage."
In Germany, Maniche scored a spectacular equalizer to earn Cologne a 1-1 draw at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Friday.
The Portuguese midfielder collected a pass from Zoran Tosic before firing into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area in the 79th minute.
Marco Reus had put 'Gladbach ahead in the 56th, running past three Cologne players and driving a low shot into the corner of the net.
Cologne is without a win in seven games and 'Gladbach in five, with both teams hovering near the relegation zone.
