Chelsea loses but still reaches knockout stage

Chelsea reached the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday despite losing 1-0 to Basel in Group E and manager Jose Mourinho saying they deserved to lose.

Mohamed Salah’s late strike earned Basel a 1-0 win and a second straight Group E victory over the 2012 champions, who are guaranteed a top-two finish after Schalke only drew 0-0 with Steaua Bucharest.

“A bad performance, a deserved defeat. But because of other results, we qualify,” said Mourinho, whose side joined Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. “That is the only positive thing from this night.”

In Group G, Zenit St Petersburg and FC Porto were left to compete for the second qualification spot behind Atletico after both earned 1-1 draws.

Adrian Lopez put Atletico ahead shortly after halftime before a Toby Alderweireld own goal secured a point for the Russian side.

Atletico leads Group G with 13 points while Zenit has six, one more than Porto.

Austria Vienna went ahead against the run of play at Porto through Roman Kienast in the 11th minute. It was Austria Vienna’s first goal in this season’s group stage.

The Portuguese side equalized three minutes after the break through Jackson Martinez. Porto travels to Madrid for its final game, leaving Zenit in pole position for the runners-up spot.
