China fails to make women's World Cup
HOST China lost to Japan 0-2 at the Asian Football Confederation Women's Asian Cup third-place playoff in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, yesterday.
The "Steel Roses" failed to qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time as the winner of the game could have join finalists North Korea and Australia at the 2011 World Cup in Germany. Australia won the crown, winning 6-5 on penalties after the final ended 1-1. Sawa Homare scored once in each half to beat China as Japan became the last team to secure a berth to Germany.
