China lands in Thimpu for qualifier
THE Chinese national team arrived in Thimpu, capital of Bhutan, yesterday, ahead of their 2018 World Cup Asian qualifier on Tuesday.
The team had been training in Yunnan Province’s Chenggong since June 5 to acclimatize itself with Bhutan’s plateau conditions and the artificial turf.
China and Bhutan are in Group C along with China’s Hong Kong, Maldives and Qatar. As a seeded team, China had a bye in the first round of group matches, in which Bhutan was trashed 0-7 by Hong Kong, and Qatar edged Maldives 1-0.
China is currently 79th in FIFA rankings, while its group opponents are all out of the top 150. The team recently released a 1-minute promotional short film entitled “Don’t look down upon any opponent”‚ to ensure there is no complacency among the players.
“I don’t think a score like 0-7 can explain everything. Even a team like Brazil can concede seven goals on home court,” China manager Alain Perrin said about Bhutan’s loss on June 11 in an earlier interview.
“We are playing away, while our opponents are more used to playing on plateau and on artificial turf. Chinese players should make good use of their larger size compared to their opponents,” the Frenchman added.
