China makes comeback win over Laos at World Cup qualifer

CHINA rallied from two goals down to beat Laos 7-2 at the home leg of the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifers today.

Thirty-three minutes into the first half, the hosts found them 0-2 down against the Southeast Asianteam. Vongchiengkham Souk A Phone fired a powerful low shot in the fifth minute, before Visay Phaphouvanin doubled the advantage with a diving header in a counter attack.

The angry spectators began to call for the ouster of head coach Gao Hongbo, who was sitting on the VIP tribune for a one-match ban which he received from the last group match against Uzbekistan at the AFC Asian Cup 2011.

Substitute striker Yang Xu who came from the bench to take place of lone forward Gao Lin salvaged the Chinese team. He pulled one back with a sharp header in the injury time of the first half, before scored two more after the break to complete his hatt-rick. Former Shalke 04 player Hao Junmin and substitute midfielder Chen Tao both made a brace in the second period to seal victory.

Laos defender Ketsada Souksavanh was sent off before the final whistle for protesting against the referee.

The Chinese Football Association confirmed that they will invite a famous foreign coach to take over Gao Hongpo after the second round of the Brazil World Cup Asian qualifier. Some big names of the football world are being connected with the Chinese national team.

China will play Laos in the away leg on July 28.
