China snatches a win but Japan captures Cup

China squeezed past Australia 4-3 yesterday to earn its first victory at the East Asian Cup, which was won by Japan, which edged out host South Korea 2-1 in a later match.

 

At Seoul’s Jamsil Olympic Stadium, China poured in three second-half goals and fended off a last-minute charge by the Socceroos to secure three points.

 

China ended the tournament on five points, while Australia finished with one point.

 

China came out firing from the start and struck first through Yu Dabao in the fourth minute. The striker took a Sun Xiang feed from the left wing and rolled it in from just inside the arc.

 

Australia fought back and Aaron Mooy evened the score close to the half-hour mark with a rocket strike from the midfield. Chinese keeper Yang Zhi was unable to stop the scorching shot with his desperate dive.

 

In the 36th minute, Wu Lei tested Mark Birighitti in the Australian net from the center of the box. Then about four minutes before the break, Mooy had a chance to score his second of the game but his freekick bounced right in front of Yang.

 

Sun Ke put China ahead in the 56th minute, scoring on a rebound after Birighitti stopped Yu from near the penalty area.

 

Australia nearly equalized for the second time, as Mooy fired one from the top of the arc and Yang barely tipped it over the bar. In the 64th, Tomi Juric also had a chance from close range but volleyed the ball over the bar.

 

Yang Xu set up the driving Sun Ke on the right wing but Birighitti denied the midfielder his second goal of the match.

 

Yang Xu got home in a breakaway in the 86th, and Wu Lei followed in the very next minute to seemingly put the game out of reach. But Adam Taggart got one back in the 89th minute for Australia.
