Chinese eve advance to last 16
CHINA advanced to the knockout round of the 2015 Women’s World Cup following a 2-2 draw with New Zealand in Winnipeg, though head coach Hao Wei was sent to the stands for time-wasting and will miss the team’s next match.
Also advancing from Group A was host Canada after it drew 1-1 with the Netherlands and topped the group with five points. Both China and the Netherlands collected four points but China placed second on goal difference with a one-goal advantage over the Dutch.
At Winnipeg Stadium, defender Rebekah Stott gave New Zealand in the 28th minute. The referee then awarded a controversial penalty to China for a handball by Betsy Hassett in the area in the 41st. Replays showed the ball hit her chest and head. Wang Lisi scored to tie it 1-1.
Wang Shanshan’s goal in the 60th gave China the lead, but Hannah Wilkinson headed past Wang Fei four minutes later to set the final score at 2-2.
Coach Hao was standing on the sidelines during injury time, when he stopped a ball flying towards him with his hands. The referee thought he had deliberately interrupted Ria Percival’s attempt to pick the ball and resume play, and sent him to the stands.
New Zealand manager Tony Readings, obviously upset with the match result and the Chinese coach’s delaying tactics, refused to shake hands with Hao before the latter left the pitch.
Hao will miss China’s next match on June 20 against the winner of the Group C encounter between Switzerland and Cameroon today.
“I’m very pleased with the team’s performance,” Hao said in a post-match TV interview. “I hope we can go further into the tournament, and we do have the ability to do so.”
Elsewhere, Germany and Norway advanced to the last 16 with easy victories in Group B.
Favorite Germany beat Thailand 4-0 to progress as the group leader ahead of Norway which secured its berth by beating Ivory Coast 3-1.
