Chinese football takes another hit after latest on-pitch brawl

ON a day of high drama when Guangzhou Evergrande sacked Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro, players and staff of Shandong Luneng got into a massive brawl with match officials after the Chinese Super League game against Guizhou Renhe on Thursday.

The Chinese Football Association said yesterday it was looking into the incident which happened in Guiyang, Guizhou Province.

Pictures emerged yesterday of Shandong’s Brazilian head coach Cuca with a deep cut above his left eye, which Shandong blamed on line referee Zhan Wei.

The post-match incident blew up after a controversial decision in the 69th minute of the game. The teams were level at 2-2 when Shandong’s Li Songyi scored from a header. Referee Xu Fuxin first gave it a goal but then ruled it offside after seeing the raised flag of linesman Zhan.

Shandong’s coaching staff, including Cuca, walked up to argue with Zhan.

After the match ended, Shandong captain Hao Junmin went up to talk to Xu about his decision, only to be shown a second yellow card, followed by a red. The players and the bench staff soon surrounded the match officials that led to a free-for-all with Cuca and Zhan getting physical.

Zhan sat down on the pitch, covering his head with his hands. Police rushed in and the referees were escorted inside the tunnel.

Cuca did not attend the post-match press conference with Shandong Luneng team leader Liu Ouwei telling reporters that he had suffered a 5-centimeter gash in his left eye socket after the brawl with Zhan.

CFA said yesterday it would study the video footage and reports by the referees, match supervisor and referee supervisor before announcing its decision.

Meanwhile, Beijing Guo’an blew its chance to go on top of the CSL table after the capital side was held goalless at Guangzhou R&F last night.

After 13 rounds, Shandong, Guangzhou Evergrande and Beijing share the table at top with 26 points.

The Chinese Super League heads into a two-week break for the 2018 Asian World Cup qualifiers.
