Chinese women claim first victory

HOST China claimed its first victory at the 17th Asian Football Confederation Women's Asian Cup in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, thrashing Vietnam 5-0 in the Group B second round match yesterday.

With the win, China now has a big chance to qualify for the semifinals after settling for a goalless tie with South Korea on Wednesday.

Australia meanwhile booked its place in the semifinals after beating South Korea 3-1 in another match.

China, which has reached the final of the Asian Cup in 10 of the last 11 editions, was too strong for Vietnam, dominating the entire match at the Chengdu Shuangliu Sports Center.

"All our starting players did a good job," said Shang Ruihua, coach of the Chinese team. "The passing of the team has improved a lot.

"Compared to the friendly match against Thailand before the Asian Cup, our young players made much progress this time," said Shang. "I am so happy with that, and I believe we will play better and better."

China scored in the seventh minute when defender Li Danyang headed in Liu Huana's fine cross, four minutes before Yuan Fan netted in captain Bi Yan's corner.

Zhang Rui shook off two defenders to drive in a long shot for China's third goal in the 36th minute.

In the 44th minute, Li Danyang split the defense and dashed into the box only to be brought down harshly. China's captain Bi scored from the resultant penalty to make it 4-0.

Vietnam's misery was further compounded in the second half when Chinese forward Han Duan's long-range shot found the net in the 49th minute.

China is now ranked second in Group B with four points, two points behind Australia. South Korea is third while Vietnam is last.

After a goalless first half, Australia started at a faster pace in the second and scored through defender Kim Carroll from Heather Garriock's corner. Lisa De Venna added the second in the 59th minute.

Australia enlarged its lead to 3-0 when substitute Samantha May Kerr's tight-angle shot settled in the bottom of the net in the 65th minute.

Defender Kang Sun-mi headed in a consolation goal for Korea.
