Citizen meet to kick off

THE “Greenland Group Cup” Shanghai Citizen Sports Meet will kick off on Saturday, the Shanghai Sports Bureau announced yesterday.
It will be Shanghai’s second citizen sports meet, which is organized every four years. Unlike traditional sports meets, the citizen sports meet aims at getting as many citizens as possible involved in both competitive and non-competitive activities. The meet will last until November, featuring over 1,300 events covering 67 sports disciplines like football, archery, fencing, skating, chess, etc. According to the bureau, more than 200,000 local residents have already registered online for events at smydh.cn. Apart from finding itself a title sponsor Greenland Group, which also backs Shanghai’s Chinese Super League side Greenland Shenhua, the sports meet has authorized 62 enterprises and societies to become co-organizers this year to host the finals of all the 67 disciplines.
