City climbs to second on late Johnson strike
MANCHESTER City climbed to second in the English Premier League, at least until Chelsea played Arsenal later yesterday, when it beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Eastlands with a late winner from Adam Johnson.
Johnson, who had only been on the pitch three minutes as a substitute for Yahya Toure, scored a superb goal 15 minutes from time after collecting the ball on the right, jinking his way past two defenders and curling a low shot into the far corner of the Newcastle net.
Chelsea tops the table with 15 points, followed by City on 14 and Manchester United on 12. Arsenal, on 11 points, would go ahead of City if it beats London rival Chelsea.
There was drama before the goals at Eastlands when Newcastle's on-loan winger, French international Hatem Ben Arfa was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected broken left leg after a powerful challenge from City's Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong.
Ben Arfa's left leg buckled as de Jong's momentum carried him forward and the nature of the injury was so upsetting that ESPN television, broadcasting the match live, decided not to show replays.
City, coming off a 1-0 win over Chelsea last weekend, went ahead with a penalty after Newcastle defender Mike Williamson was adjudged to have brought down Carlos Tevez.
Tevez picked himself up and smashed the ball low past Tim Krul for the opener after 18 minutes.
Newcastle was level six minutes later when Vincent Kompany made a poor clearance from a shot from Jonas Gutierrez whose powerful volley on the rebound gave Joe Hart no chance.
Newcastle's injury misfortune continued when it lost Fabrico Coloccini with an injury after 38 minutes.
He was replaced by Sol Campbell who made his league debut for the club and became only the second player, after Ryan Giggs, to have played in all 19 seasons of the Premier League's existence.
In later action, Liverpool was meeting Blackpool.
On Saturday, United's faltering away form continued to blight its title challenge when it was held to a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Saturday.
The match started 20 minutes late after a burst pipe damaged United's dressing room causing part of the ceiling to collapse.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side has dropped eight points in its opening four away matches.
Tottenham Hotspur is fifth on 11 points after coming from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1. Everton got its first win this season with a 2-0 success at Birmingham City and West Ham United now prop ups the table after a 1-1 home draw with Fulham.
