City fans in the dock for anthem slur
UEFA has opened a disciplinary case against Manchester City for fans booing the Champions League anthem.
The governing announced the charge yesterday for the “disruption of competition anthems” a day after City’s game against Sevilla.
The case will be heard by UEFA’s disciplinary body on November 19.
City’s ownership and fans are aggrieved with UEFA over past sanctions for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.
The anthem jeering also comes at a time when UEFA’s standing has been battered by allegations of wrongdoing involving senior officials.
Michel Platini can’t carry out his presidential role after being provisionally suspended by FIFA, pending the outcome of a full investigation into a payment. Senior vice president Angel Maria Villar is also waiting to discover if he’ll be found guilty of obstructing an investigation.
UEFA also charged Ukraine’s Dynamo Kiev for racist behavior after black fans were reportedly attacked during the team’s Champions League match against English Premier League champion Chelsea.
UEFA received reports from anti-discrimination group Fare that four men were attacked by other Dynamo fans in a home section of the Olympic Stadium at the 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Tuesday.
Before the match, UEFA promoted its “No To Racism” project which it runs with Fare.
UEFA says its disciplinary committee will judge the case next Tuesday.
Last season, UEFA sanctioned Dynamo for racist behavior by fans during a Europa League round-of-16 match against another Premier League club Everton.
