Club pays heavy price for brawl
THE China Football Association handed down heavy punishment to an amateur football club in Wuhan for its players’ role in a violent brawl that broke out after a CFA Cup match against Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning last week.
According to a statement posted on its website yesterday, the CFA canceled the registration rights of China Amateur Football League side Wuhan Hongxing Bairun FC, effectively derecognizing it. The club was also fined 200,000 yuan (US$30,560), and eight of its players and officials banned from football related activities for life.
It is one of the heaviest punishments ever issued by the CFA. The shameful incident occurred after Jiangsu edged Wuhan 1-0 with an extra-time goal in a CFA Cup third-round match on May 11 in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei Province. Video footage showed Wuhan players beating up their Jiangsu rivals on the pitch after the final whistle. A Jiangsu team staff was also mandhandled by some 10 men in the stands. At least seven Jiangsu players suffered injuries in the brawl.
The CFA’s statement said the punishments were given after hearing reports from match supervisors, referees, club officials, players, as well as evidence from photos and videos.
The CFA said its investigation showed that 10 Wuhan players and two officials attacked Jiangsu players and officials. Four of the attackers, along with 10 other Wuhan players who were not involved in the fight, were also found to have used false identity to represent Wuhan Hongxing.
“Such conduct seriously affected the image of Chinese football, causing adverse social influence,” said the statement.
According to CFA discipline regulations, two Wuhan club officials and six players have been banned from all football-related activities for life. Four Wuhan players involved in the fight were banned from CFA-organized matches for three years. Another 10 players with false identity were banned from matches for two years.
The CFA also canceled the registration rights of Wuhan Hongxing Bairun FC, though the statement did not say how long the derecognition will last. The match result will be revised as a 3-0 victory for Jiangsu.
“Other people or organizations involved in gross violations of rules in the incident will be investigated further,” the statement added.
Jiangsu, led by Dan Petrescu, was a big spender in the winter transfer window before the 2016 CSL season kicked off, signing big names including Alex Teixeira, Ramires and Jo, though the Brazilians were not included in the CFA Cup squad. The team is second in the CSL standing, three points behind Luis Felipe Scolari’s Guangzhou Evergrande.
