Clubs hunt for talent in South America
CHINA'S football clubs are looking to snap up players from South America with Shanghai Shenhua in talks with Rolando Schiavi and league champion Guangzhou Evergrande hoping to sign Elkeson, reports claim.
Shanghai, which already boasts former Chelsea stars Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, hopes to sign the 39-year-old Boca Juniors defender Schiavi for the coming season, the Oriental Sports Daily reported, quoting club owner Zhu Jun.
Schiavi, a former Argentina international, has already held talks with Shanghai's Argentine coach Sergio Batista, the paper said.
Meanwhile, a Gazzetta dello Sport report claimed Drogba had turned down an offer from Juventus because he wants a contract to run until June 2015.
There were other stipulations that could hamper the deal, according to Gazzetta.
It said Drogba, who moved to Chelsea in 2004 and eventually led the English club to Champions League triumph last season, would expect to be released for the Africa Cup of Nations, which is held January 19-February 10.
Potentially, that could be a problem for Juventus, which will be involved in the last 16 of the Champions League on February 12 and 20.
Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Elkeson is set to join Guangzhou Evergrande after being released by Rio de Janeiro club Botafogo. The 23-year-old will reach Guangzhou on January 4 to meet Evergrande's Italian coach Marcelo Lippi.
AC Milan has also announced a "commercial partnership" with Evergrande.
No details were released by the Rossoneri, whose CEO Adriano Galliani concluded the deal by a handshake with Guangzhou president Liu Jongzhuo. Milan said "Galliani gave the Chinese (club) president a shirt with 8-Liu printed on the back".
Chinese clubs have become attractive destinations for global football stars approaching the end of their careers, or youthful talent seeking to build on their potential.
