Cologne rejects Tianjin bid for France striker Modeste
STRIKER Anthony Modeste will stay at Cologne for next season, despite offers from Chinese outfit Tianjin Quanjian, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday.
Chinese Super League club Tianjin, coached by former Italy defender and World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, had reportedly offered the German side 35 million euros (US$39.8 million), and Modeste an annual salary of 10 million euros. “FC forward Anthony Modeste will not transfer to Tianjin Quanjian after the parties involved were not able to reach an agreement,” Cologne said on its website. “FC Koln reached the decision to terminate discussions on Wednesday. Anthony Modeste’s contract with FC Koln runs until June 30, 2021.” The 29-year-old Frenchman scored 25 league goals last season, finishing behind only Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (30 goals) and Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31 goals) in the Bundesliga scoring charts. Modeste’s goals helped Cologne finish fifth in the German top flight and qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. Tianjin currently lies sixth in the 16-team CSL table on 22 points, 15 points behind defending champion and leader Guangzhou Evergrande.
